Dr. Basil Benduri Kaburi
PROGRAM COORDINATOR
Dr. Basil Benduri Kaburi is a medical epidemiologist with the Ghana FELTP. He has over 15 years of experience in clinical practice, public health, digital health system design, and data-driven decision-making.
He earned his medical degree (MBChB) at KNUST – Ghana and completed a PhD in Epidemiology at Hannover Medical School - Germany. He also holds an MPhil in Applied Epidemiology and Disease Control from the University of Ghana, a postgraduate diploma in Occupational Health (Policy and Practice) from Cardiff University – UK, and an advanced Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) certification jointly awarded by the US CDC and the University of Ghana. His additional qualifications include Health Administration and Management from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Field Management of Infectious Diseases from Yonsei University, and a fellowship in Health Policy and Economics from Seoul National University.
Dr. Kaburi’s areas of expertise span implementation research, field epidemiology, qualitative research, evidence synthesis, digital public health solutions, scientific communication, and project coordination.
He has worked with multinational and multidisciplinary teams on collaborative research and training projects. Notable engagements include collaborations with Public Health England and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health on an environmental epidemiology training project to strengthen global health security; with the US CDC and KOICA on the Ghana Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme; and with the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) in partnership with Vital Strategies on a rapid mortality surveillance project.
His consultancy work includes assignments for the West African Health Organisation (WAHO), assessing post-Ebola public health emergency preparedness in Liberia (2018); and for the International Rescue Committee (IRC), supporting COVID-19 preparedness and response in Liberia (2020). He has also served as a consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO), evaluating Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Oral Cholera Vaccination Campaigns and contributing to a Global Landscape Analysis of Wastewater and Environmental Surveillance (WES).
Dr. Kaburi has over 25 publications across various public health domains, including peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, and book chapters. He serves as a peer reviewer for several journals including BMC journals.
He is also a guest scientist in the Department of Epidemiology at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig, Germany.
